Lifelong Learning Series- Bret Lott Writing Salon
Tuesday evenings, Sept 7 - Oct 9
Because of the overwhelming success of his first series, novelist Bret Lott will again offer a ten-week course in writing fiction at the Charleston Library Society. Modeled after salons held by such Charleston literary icons as DuBose Heyward and John Bennett, the course will be an opportunity for 8-10 fiction writers to meet to talk about their work and learn how to craft their writing under the direction of Mr. Lott, who has nearly thirty years of experience as author, teacher, and editor. Through weekly critiques of members' original work, members, matters such as dialog, pace, plot, setting, and, most importantly, the development of artistic vision will be discussed.

Lifelong Learning Series- Marguerite Palmer's Book Conservation and Care
Tuesday evenings, October 19th & 26th
Because of the nature of the publishing world, the books you inherit may be the antiquities of the next generation: it is vital to learn how to care for them. Marge Palmer has been caring for books most of her life. In addition to her genuine love of books, she has a wealth of knowledge about conserving and repairing the volumes she treasures. Because damage to a book is cumulative, Mrs. Palmer will discuss how the incorrect handling and storage of a book can quickly transform a new book into a worn or even unusable one. She will focus on the proper handling, storage, and importance of providing a safe environment in humid Charleston.
Cost: $75 for members, $100 for nonmembers
