PHOTO RESEARCH SERVICES
It takes time to search the Charleston Library Society's photograph archives for a specific research request.
  • The research fee is $25 for every half-hour.
  • In this half-hour, a Library Society staff member can usually produce an image or images relevant to the patron's request. There is no guarantee that images will be located, and in many cases, the Charleston Library Society archives may not contain relevant images.

When finished researching, a staff member will fax/mail photocopies of the images or email low-resolution scans of the images to the patron in order for them to make their selection.

  • Photocopies are $0.30 per page. The patron pays mailing costs. There is no charge for emailing low-resolution scans.
  • For all orders there is a $10 handling fee. This fee is not cumulative: if a patron orders eight scans, the fee is still only $10.

To obtain a publication-quality scan, please consult the following guidelines:

  • For a 300-DPI JPG or TIFF file, the fee is $25 per image.
  • There is no charge to email any image, but in some cases, it is necessary to burn
the images to a CD and mail it out. The cost per CD is $2.00 (as many images as possible will be placed on the CD). The patron pays for shipping of the disk or is free to pick up the item at our office.

The fees for making photographic copy-prints are as follows:

  • 4 x 6 in., $15
  • 8 x 10 in., $25
  • To receive a price quote for irregular-sized copy-prints, please contact Carol Jones

If you plan to publish Charleston Library Society images in print or in any media form, additional use fees will apply.

  • For all profit-based ventures, the use fee for U.S. rights is $100 per image.
  • Non-profit rate is $75 per image.
  • World rights are an additional $35.
  • All images must be properly credited with the citation “From the Collections of the Charleston Library Society.”

To obtain permission to publish a Charleston Library Society image, a letter must be faxed/mailed/emailed describing the publication project. Please itemize each of the images in the body of the letter. If possible, also include any academic or institutional affiliations, the publisher, expected publication date, and estimates of the first print run and cover price. This request should be addressed to the Charleston Library Society Executive Director W. Eric Emerson (eemerson@charlestonlibrarysociety.org). Once the executive director approves use of the images, the patron will receive a letter of authorization.

Clearance of any copyright that may exist on a visual image, particularly for commercial purposes or publication, is the responsibility of the user. The Charleston Library Society does not have special records of current ownership of copyright, in particular, for photographs. Users are responsible for determining what rights may exist and in whom those rights are vested. Failure to honor existing restrictions on use can result in liability for copyright infringement.

For any questions, please contact Charleston Library Society Assistant Librarian Carol Jones at cjones@charlestonlibrarysociety.org.
